Learning at Pilton

All pupils have access to our wide ranging and challenging curriculum.

Starting the learning journey - Years 7 to 9

The school builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills that young people have gained in their primary schools. We have excellent working partnerships with our partner primary schools and this helps ensure seamless provision. Our aim is to develop thoughtful, confident young people, whilst preparing them for national examinations by the age of 16.

In Year 7, pupils follow the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). The IMYC is an enquiry based curriculum where each subject is taught by a subject specialist in an engaging, challenging manner.  It helps pupils develop an enquiring mind and develops the personal attributes that will support them throughout their  lives.

Results from national tests taken at the end of Primary School enable us to place pupils in sets for Mathematics from the start of Year 7. In all other subjects, Year 7 students are taught in mixed ability groups.

Our internal assessments are used to set students in Science and Modern Languages in Years 8 and 9. They remain in mixed ability teaching groups in other curriculum areas. This mixture of setting and mixed ability teaching has proved to be highly successful in raising standards.

Learning in Years 10 and 11

In Years 10 and 11 our guided options system enables students to follow the courses that best suit their learning styles, enthusiasms and career aspirations. In addition to our traditional suite of GCSE courses we have a range of vocational subjects.

All students study English, Mathematics, Science, P.E., R.E., and Citizenship. In science students study either a double award or they may opt to pursue Physics, Chemistry and Biology separately.

As a specialist language college we encourage most students to study a modern language through to GCSE.

In addition, students choose four options from a range of subjects. Currently these are Art, Business Studies, Child Development, Dance, Drama, Music, History, Geography, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Catering, Construction, Electronics, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles, Travel and Tourism, P.E., I.T., Hair & Beauty and Motor Vehicle Mechanics.

The subjects we offer are under constant review to make sure we are providing our students what they need to succeed after they leave school. For more information please contact Mr Leighton Tellem.
