Yr7 Humanities: Geography, History and RE.

The Humanities subjects are a vital part of the broad and balanced curriculum followed by students at Pilton. The integrated model we have developed in year 7 provides students with a deep understanding of the world we live in, how it has changed over time, and the diverse views and beliefs of the people living in it.

Our aim is to create independent and curious learners with all the skills necessary to succeed in and comprehend the modern world.

Grouping of students

Students are taught in mixed-ability tutor groups by one member of staff for six lessons a fortnight. This eases the transition to secondary school by reducing the number of staff students are taught by, and enables staff to more effectively differentiate and personalise the curriculum for students.

Where this is not possible due to timetabling constraints students may have two members of staff teaching the group. On rare occasions when three members of staff teach the group the subject will be split into its separate components (Geography, History and Religious Education).

 

Assessment and expected standard

Assessment is ongoing through out the course so it is important that students consistently produce work to the best of their ability. In addition pupils are assessed against National Curriculum levels eight times a year. This provides two levels for each of the three component subjects and an additional two levels for Citizenship. With six lessons a fortnight we expect students to make substantial progress over the course of year 7.

 

Home Learning Opportunities

Independent learning is crucial to future success in the Humanities subjects and students begin developing these skills in year 7. Two substantial home learning projects are set each year, namely the Fullabrook wind farm research project and the Heroes research project. Homework is also set on a weekly basis to complement the taught programme.
